The Cancer in the Soul of Healthcare

This topic isn't fun to talk about. It is particularly painful for me as a person, patient, doctor, social scientist, and writer. That's exactly why I have a responsibility to tell you the truth. The medical malpractice industry is the worst disease that our healthcare system could ever face.

Here is why I can give you a fair insight into the industry and its effect on healthcare.

  1. I have been on the wrong side of negligent doctors and hospitals. I could have sued them and gotten millions for a wrecked dream, a lost career, as a heart surgeon.  I didn't sue anyone but it took decades for me to get over my sense of betrayal at the hands of my childhood idols (my doctors) who nearly wrecked my life (literally).
  2. I've also mauled by legal hyenas/ambulance chaser whose sole ambition was to make as much money as they could from death.  My residency's hospital wound up paying a relatively small settlement for the "gross negligence'. I should have never been sued, much less left taking the blame for my physician-supervisors (who paid off the opposite to drop them from the case. After almost fifteen years, I still am angry about that.

We are going to get specific about how the medical malpractice industry takes advantage of death. We are also going to talk about the fortunes which are made from what they do, and what really happens to people who 'get in bed with them'.  Malpractice not only inspires doctors to betray each other. It encourages them to see their patients as “risk” and indeed, ignore their oath to “first, do no harm.” The consequence of allowing this industry to thrive without restraint is to allow a “cancer” to eat away the ‘heart’ of medicine.

After reading what I have to say, some self-serving and ill-informed people will complain. They’ll say things like: “…not every malpractice attorney is like that.” “Some doctors need to be punished.” “Who else is going to stick up for the poor victims of the small minority of greedy, negligent, or incompetent doctors?” “The economic impact … Read More
